Andy Mortenson, MD, MBA
Medical Director and Co-Founder
At PAX Institute, we collaborate with healthcare providers to offer cutting-edge psychiatric and ketamine therapy for patients with common mental health conditions. For over 20 years, ketamine has demonstrated powerful efficacy in treating depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), offering relief where traditional treatments have failed.
Why Refer Your Patients to PAX?
When left untreated, mental health problems can seriously impact physical health, leading to various complications that further lower the quality of life. Ketamine offers a promising solution by providing fast-acting relief, offering new hope for improved mental and physical well-being.
Experienced Professionals
Our medical team includes experienced psychiatric providers, as well as Mayo Clinic trained anesthesia experts skilled in administering ketamine and managing its side effects. We offer a multi-disciplinary team-based approach staffed with physician anesthesiologists, CRNAs, pharmacists, and mental health nurse practitioners.
Collaborative Care
PAX Institute collaborates with patients’ primary and mental health providers, ensuring comprehensive care that meets each patient’s unique needs. PAX providers will remain in contact with the patient’s personal providers throughout their psychiatric or ketamine therapy.
Proven Results
For over 20 years, clinical studies have demonstrated that ketamine therapy is highly effective, with a majority of patients reporting rapid and lasting improvements in their symptoms for months or years.
PATIENT SAFETY
Safety is our top priority.
We conduct thorough patient screenings to assess eligibility and monitor each patient closely during treatment. Collaboration with referring providers ensures comprehensive care and helps us make well-informed decisions about patient candidacy.
How Ketamine Works
Ketamine can improve depression through several mechanisms, primarily by acting as an NMDA receptor antagonist. This action leads to increased levels of glutamate, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation. The resulting surge in glutamate can promote synaptic plasticity and the growth of new connections in the brain, which may help alleviate depressive symptoms.
Additionally, ketamine has rapid-acting effects compared to traditional antidepressants, often providing relief within hours rather than weeks. It may also influence other neurotransmitter systems, including dopamine and serotonin, further contributing to its antidepressant effects.
In clinical settings, ketamine provides both immediate and lasting improvements in depression symptoms. Positive behaviors (e.g., daily routines or goals) that patients adopt once they start feeling better can further enhance treatment outcomes by reinforcing positive neuroplasticity.
